Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV)
The Wise and Foolish Builders
24 “Therefore everyone who
hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who
built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams
rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall,
because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who
hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish
man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams
rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great
crash.”
In
Matt. 7:24-29, we find Jesus telling the parable of the two builders. The wise
builder built his house on the rock while the foolish builder built his house
upon the sand. When the storms came, the house built on the rock stood firm
against the winds and rain. It had a solid foundation. But the house built on
the sand collapsed in ruin as its shifting foundation was washed away.
The
thing is we’re really not talking about two builders making houses in two
different spots. Jesus was not making a point about where we should build our
houses, this is one of his awesome parables. Basically he’s illustration what
foundation we are building on in our life. It is ultimately a spiritual truth.
The storm illustrates the various problems we face in our lives. We all have
our struggles and we all have hardships in our lives. He is telling about two
different lifestyles that we can live when it comes to facing these trials in
our lives. Now, do we want to be like the foolish man who builds his foundation
on the sand? Obviously things don’t turn out so well for the dude who build his
house on the sand. It was washed away and taken out. What about he guy who
build it on the stone? The house stood firm against the storm because of its
solid foundation. Foundation is the key here, and that foundation is Jesus. The
house on the sand tells us that if we don’t have Jesus as our foundation we
collapse. If we have a solid foundation in Christ we will stand firm against
any trials we face. Jesus says the house which stood illustrated a life built
upon the foundation of obeying His word. A life lived like this endures forever
while the other is washed away into eternal ruin. Build you house on the
foundation of the Lord!
Now
when we face trails in our lives, do you look to Jesus as your ultimate
foundation or do you find yourself getting washed away? Look to God for
everything and every trail because he will take care of your burden. He knows
it all folks, and it is up to us to have faith that God will take us through
it.
